Fruit Ninja – Cause ninjas hate fruit

Fruit Ninja, along with Angry Birds it’s one of the most popular iphone/android games on the market today with over 20 million downloads across all platforms, who can argue with those results! Keep reading for many great reasons for why you should buy a slice of the action.

Fruit Ninja, developed by none other than halfbrick studio’s which is based right here in Brisbane, Australia is the creator of this addictive and extremely simple game that serves its purpose well, to kill time. This game is on both ios and android so it covers pretty much everyone who has a smartphone and at $99c it’s a bargain as well!

The aim of this game is to slice the fruit that flies up into the screen before it falls off it again while trying to achieve a combo of 3 or more to activate a special streak power that gives extra “fruit slices”, eventually this streak dies off but the longer you keep getting combo’s the higher it goes!

Your not just limited to one game mode either, if your not so keen on the traditional one which includes bombs that end streaks and reduce your total fruit sliced by 10. My favorite is the “arcade” mode which gives you a minute to get the highest streak possible but as a challenge random special fruits appear on-screen that have different effects such as slowing down the fruit, doubling your score for a few seconds or dramatically increasing the amount of fruit shot up. The biggest challenge in this is to get all three at once and to get an incredible score and keep it up for the whole minute. This is great to play in my spare time as i’m always trying to beat my best score of 830 fruit.

The graphics are very nice for a phone based game, although up-close they may seem a little low-poly, but that isn’t noticeable when your slicing fruit like a mad ninja in the heat of battle, the sound effects also go hand-in-hand with the graphics providing a very elegant and fruity feel to the game, such as the “shink” of the sword going through a melon, almost like it was actually happening. I’m questioning if they actually sliced fruit in their back yard to record these sounds they fit the game that well.

Not only are there multiple game modes but there’s also many different background and sword blades you can unlock for more custom setups, I myself like my frosty blade with blue particle effects when i’m slicing my fruit and the traditional background, because I haven’t really focused on unlocking many of the backgrounds yet.

You can also view your friends, and random people’s scores on openfeint to try to beat them if you’d like a challenge. I really like this feature as it also makes the game social, I remember trying to beat my friends arcade score for a long time and him taunting me that I couldn’t for a long time. Oh there’s also live multiplayer if you’ve got an internet connection, it just matches you up with someone from around the world and then the slicing begins, you both get a different outline of fruit to slice however and a white outline means anyone can slice it, opening it up for some interesting tactics.

Overall this is a fantastic little app, well worth the money. I’ve even bought it multiple times for my ipod and android phone, just so I can play it whenever I want! Great work halfbrick, i’m looking forward to seeing what smash hit you come out with next.
