Runescape – Or Botscape?

Note: This was written on the 28/09/2011.

I recently referred to Runescape on my last Minecraft post, so I thought hey, why not review it, I’ve also been playing it for around five years, which over time I have seen it at it’s best and at it’s worst. Right now it’s definitely at it’s worst, read more below to find out why.

Play the YouTube video at the bottom of the page for some of Runescape’s old classic music while reading through this blog.

Now being an MMORPG game i’ll be rating the game on the current content, and the updates that are out right now, and this review won’t be updated to include any further information. Now that that’s out of the way, Runescape is played by thousands of kids over the world daily, on average there’s between 100-200 thousand players online at a single time looking at the counter at the top of the main page.

Now i’ve been playing Runescape for around five years now since it’s earliest day when were were no such thing as bots or scammers. Those were the days when people actually played an MMORPG game for a sense of achievement legitimately, without using macros or entire programs to do it for them. Skillcapes were actually a rare sight but if you had one, you were considered amazing and may have had a small group of people following you everywhere. Players were much more friendly back then and there was no rampant swearing, abuse or seven year old kids trying to troll people. If you played back then you would remember that the environment was much more suited to children, however over time updates have slowly degraded the immersion factors and general feel of the game until it’s what it is today.

People scamming, swearing, there are literally thousands of bots in every single world, people at meeting points with speech macros repeating a website to sell gold, there is no place on any map you can go to escape it. Runescape has become a breeding-ground for this, and more come every day, and the worst part is Jagex is blissfully ignoring all the people crying out asking to fix the rampant problems in the game. Forums are full of posts about bots, swearing, dead content updates and an un-balanced combat triangle. Here’s a link to the Runescape existing game content forums so if you play take a browse, anytime you look at this page there would more than likely be a post on the bots.http://services.runescape.com/m=forum/forums.ws?74,75

The quests in the game was the aspect I enjoyed the most back in the early days, getting all the resources you needed then setting out into lands unknown to possibly fight a super strong creature or end up having to go around the world tracking down items from different people. They were just well thought out and most of them were just fun even though you needed to look at a guide sometimes because you were stuck on a puzzle. The parties were another enjoyable aspect of the game, just kicking back with a group of friends in your house sipping some dragon cider or battling each other in your own houses fighting arena. Those are the times i’ll be remembering when thinking of Runescape, not today when your able to quest but you won’t be able to get the same feeling from it, mainly due to the hoards of people around the world who are gruff towards you or are simply bots. It’s even fairly hard to find a nice person on the game anymore as well, due to most of the players being immature children between seven and fourteen who consistently swear or are trying to scam you in the grand exchange.

I know that you are able to filter chat to stop the swearing of other players, but was it really necessary to let players swear in the first place Jagex? It doesn’t add any actual taste to conversations and it created more work for you in the end. Recently Jagex have also been creating dead content and implementing it into the game instead of fixing the problems they should be. The most recent dead update was the Clan Citadels, why do clans need floating citadels now? They were perfectly happy to go into their houses for their clan meetings but now they can meet in a place in the sky with a few resources. Sounds to me like a big player owned house, this update was a few months ago now and after having a look around clans have already dismissed the update and find it simpler to go back to their old ways of meeting in easier to reach locations. If they really wanted to add content into the game to make it more enjoyable listen to the players! They seem to know what their talking about seeing as they are the ones who actually play the game.

Dungeoneering was another update that everyone who was there as long as I have hated. It came out as a skill but is much more suited to a mini-game that clans would play through for a few nice items. I don’t even want to know how it was labelled as a skill and came all this was through the production line without someone saying “Hey, this isn’t a skill, what’s this doing in here”.

Wow I could actually talk about what Jagex has done wrong for another 1000 words but I should start to wrap it up a bit. Jagex say they are attending to the problems players have consistently brought up over the years but there is little proof of any resultant action based upon a players comment. Bots still run rampant even though they sometimes post results saying they’ve banned 15,000 or so, but the players don’t actually notice any difference in the population, and the mage component in the combat triangle is still wimpy and weak compared to the others. I have actually noticed lots of mage updates in an attempt to fix this, however when they seem to be getting somewhere, some person whines that there hasn’t been a melee update.

I must mention however, I suggested an update for them to consider and they actually implemented it into the game so I feel like I’ve contributed a little to the game it is today. If you wanted to know what I suggested, back before I suggested it the Xp counter numbers has no commas between the digits, making it hard to read so I just suggested to add commas between them, simple but now everyone can read how much xp they’ve earned without squinting.

Overall I must say goodbye to Runescape, it’s been fun however the problems in the game are just too great to be able to see the fun in it anymore. Even if they somehow remove all the bots, greatly improve the graphics and music, remove dungeoneering, stop people swearing and add heaps of fun content it still wouldn’t be as fun as those early days. Many have already left the game due to these consistent updates and bots ruining the game, i’m just following the smart ones and most likely leaving MMORPG games behind me forever.
