League of Legends – Only the best MOBA

League of Legends, is a game in the “MOBA” genre standing for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena which is set in a fantasy battle arena where two teams compete against each other with a goal of eliminating the opponents nexus. I’ve been playing LoL for about a year now and it’s extremely fun providing the players with huge replay ability content through the use of over 100 different characters or “champions” as their known in-game.

LoL isn’t alone in this genre however as there are a number of similar games out there such as: DOTA and HON as well as ones with slightly altered mechanics such as Smite. Although i’ve only seen friends playing these other games, I find LoL to be the most visually appealing and have the best balance between the champions from watching many games. There’s an overall pleasing aspect to the environment and a “softened” feel to everything which makes it easy on the eyes.

LoL is a very competitive game with many teams from over the world competing in championships for a cash prize, and to become the best team in the world. As you probably know by now this is a very team-orientated game with one player either making or breaking the game for the rest of your team and the others either praising them of getting angry for being incompetent or just plain trolling/feeding.

To summarize the goal of the game, each team attempts to destroy the opponents nexus in the corner of their respective side of the map. Seems simple so far right? But along the way there are multiple “objectives” each team can tackle from killing the dragon or baron to increase their money and add a buff, killing weaker minions in the “jungle” or destroying the enemies inhibitors with each giving a different tactical advantage. There are three lanes which are each occupied by a varying number of champions at any one time which each team must try to “push”. These pushes are aimed at destroying the turrets on the way to the enemies nexus to win the game. However the other team is trying to push at the same time which means you have to try to eliminate the enemy champions before pushing. Not only this but expert players must last hit the enemies “creeps” or minions to gain an advantage in gold to purchase better items than the other team to further assist in  killing the champions.

Riot – the creators of this game, bring out new champions every second week or so, and they are focused on providing a fair and equal game play experience with champion balances even more commonly. Although after a champion is released they are usually slightly overpowered but are then patched soon after. The most recent addition to the collection is “Kha-Zix” which i’m finding to be very enjoyable to play with as he as sustain, stealth, a leap and nice damage although it doesn’t beat my beat champion so far – Ezreal.

I love how the game itself is free to download and play as much as you like, although there is an in-game shop all the champions can be obtained without spending a single dollar. If you’d like to obtain champions faster then you can spend some of your hard earned cash on these champs and possibly even pick up a shiny new skin for them as well to show it off. Although there are still “runes” which money can’t buy, this keeps the game still perfectly fair with no advantages to the rich, there’s no buy to win in this game!

The overall visual aesthetic of the game is brilliant and brings it together nicely and greatly enhances the game play experience. Recently they’ve been working on the visual side to update many of the old champs skins to bring up to the visual style of the game today which has been progressively getting better over time. An example of this would be the recent update to Ashe’s skin which looked very outdated compared to some of the new champs they have brought out lately. Another element of the game I really like are the sounds, each being individually tailored to their champion and are perfect for the skill they represent. Each sound is directional in 3D space which makes it much easier to pinpoint a champions location as well as adding a whole new vibrant feel to the game and making it even more fun to cast an ultimate!

I love playing league of legends, the consistent updates, the well balanced champions and the nice community are just a few of the other positive’s in this game. (2015 Update: Not such a nice community these days, as most people just get angry when their team does something wrong) Although if I have to pick something the game I dislike it would be the people who make my gaming experience an un-pleasurable one. You know those retards you can find in almost any game, usually 14 year old boys who just troll, complain and feed? They are the only thing I hate in any game and especially this one, because usually they are the ones dying on purpose to the enemy team otherwise known as “feeding”. Or shouting random remarks and insults into the chat and getting people worked up, or complaining to their team members for being “stupid” and how much better they are then everyone else just because they’ve got 1 kill over your 0. Those people just piss me off.

Good thing there’s a rating and report system after each game though, reporting lets you send an email to riot with the games stats of the reported players and if they get enough reports they will go to the “Tribunal” a player decided rating system to let other players decide if they should have action taken against them or not. On the other hand however there’s an honor system which lets you reward people for good behavior by: either helping someone with learning the game, being an honorable opponent, being a friendly person through the game or for teamwork.

That’s about it for League of Legends, feel free to leave a comment below what you think or if I need to add anything!
