Diasonic LED Office Lamp

I was browsing ebay recently looking for things to buy, (that’s quite strange I know… but I need things to review) and I found this quite awesome looking segmented reading lamp which has multiple lighting settings using a combination of two colors.

The lamp is an interesting design using a scissor arm composed of 3 sections, and 5 movement points. Three of the movement points are hinge joins which allow the lamp to be folded to many different positions, another point is at the base of the lamp and allows it to be swivelled in 360 degrees and the final point is a rotator allowing the lamp head to be rotated left and right about 45 degrees for the perfect lighting position.

The lamp uses a desk clamp to attack rigidly to any flat surface you wish to mount it, from a desk to a table, cupboard or wardrobe and even a computer if you’ve got a good surface for it. I love the metal they used for it and the screw mechanism is well designed and never gets stuck, however the height of the clamp is over double the size of what I would have expected for this product, sometimes making it awkward to use under a desk where your legs go, but as a whole I love this mechanism.

There are three different light color modes on the lamp with another three-ish brightness settings for each of those modes. The three lighting modes are, Study, Reading and Relaxation. The study mode is the whitest light, illuminating a desk very nicely and shouldn’t strain your eyes from lack of light. The reading mode is a little softer on the eyes and includes a warmer color temperature, this mode is best suited to lying in bed reading a book. The final mode is relaxation and this is the setting I love the most, it’s the warmest color and really makes you feel at home, I also use it for reading and getting ready for bed.

The image below shows the touch panel with the 6 different buttons.

The first is the on/off button, the next three are the lighting settings and the top two are the brightness adjust which have between 3 and 4 settings based on which lighting setting you are using. I’ve found the warmest lighting setting on the lowest brightness to be the one I use the most, just before I go to bed I turn it on to get under the sheets, charge my phone and read a little. I would have liked to see some more brightness options between the brightest setting and off, because there are only 4 currently and I still think the dimmest setting is too bright if you just want to lie in bed with a very dim light. I guess that could be difficulty hacked though to add more brightness options into the lamp without needing to change any electronic components.

The lamp comes with a USB 2.0 port near the base of the unit where you plug in the DC adapter. I’ve used this for an additional mini light, i’ve also tried plugging in a USB fan and probably the most common, charging a phone through it which doesn’t quite work because it’s only a 1a port. I also have to mention that plugging in a QI wireless charger into that port does actually charge the phone, but more slowly then normal and it emits an annoying whine while it does so which I assume wasn’t doing any good to the charger.

This is a very nicely designed lamp with a lot of utility for moving the light to exactly where you need it and having the brightness you require to accomplish a task. Even though the price is somewhat high ($180 AU) I think it’s definitely worth it in the end being crafted with quality materials and tested thoroughly. I would have liked to see a 2.1amp USB port however and more brightness settings, but I can live without them, it would have just been more convenient.
